The country has never been better prepared for a severe winter, according to Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney.
The minister, who is chairman of the Government's Task Force on Emergency Planning, was speaking at the launch of the 'Be Winter Ready' campaign.
The Government has spent €1.8m on 238,000 tonnes of salt for gritting the roads this winter - significantly more than the 150,000 tonnes bought in previous years.
Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe said traffic shouldn't experience the same chaos as in previous bad winters due to plans put in place to deal with severe weather.
A number of departments and agencies have come together to contribute to the campaign - which is aimed at informing the public about what precautions to take - including the Gardai, Met Eireann and HSE.
"We are in a much better position now than previously," Mr Coveney said.
