FINE Gael claims to have a mystery candidate lined up to run in the Dublin South by-election to replace George Lee.

Labour Party senator Alex White remains the favourite to win the by-election, which is scheduled to be held in the spring.

Despite the debacle over Mr Lee's resignation after just seven months as a TD, the opposition party still claims it can win the by-election.

Fine Gael says it has identified a "well-known" figure to run in the by-election. But the party hierarchy won't be revealing their identity until the by-election is called

Meanwhile, the owner of the infamous 'bog hotel' near the home of the Tanaiste, although battling ill-health, is considering contesting the Donegal South West by-election. Patsy Brogan's private bar in the Bluestack Mountains is nicknamed The Bog Hotel.
