Crewman rescued after heart attack
A crewman who suffered a heart attack on a giant oil tanker about 400 miles out to sea was airlifted to Sligo yesterday in a long-range rescue.
A UK Coast Guard helicopter from Stornoway in Scotland and a Cessna aircraft from Inverness were involved in the rescue on the Bermuda-registered vessel. Malin Head Coast Guard in Donegal co-ordinated the mission. A 23-year-old man from the Philippines suffered a heart attack. An ambulance then rushed the man to hospital.
Plan to send dogs to China scrapped
PLANS to export Irish greyhounds to China have been scrapped following the refusal by the Department of Agriculture to issue export licences.
Animal rights groups have claimed a victory after junior agriculture minister Shane McEntee announced that he would not allow dogs be sent to China. Mr McEntee told the Dail that following a meeting with the Irish Greyhound Board it was agreed that the plans for the Chinese market would exclude greyhound exportation.
Agri-journalist Murray (74) dies
Joe Murray, the former head of agricultural programmes at RTE and one of Ireland's foremost agri-journalists, died yesterday in St Vincent's Private Hospital, Dublin.
He was a consistent award winner over 30 years for programmes such as 'On the Land' and 'Landmark on TV', 'Farmweek' on RTE radio and various documentaries. Mr Murray (74) is survived by his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren.
