CORK yesterday became the first Irish city to formally abandon car clamping amid warnings it was loss-making and driving motorists to suburban shopping centres.

The city will now rely entirely on council traffic wardens and a ticketed fine regime. Vehicles can be towed but only if they are causing a traffic obstruction or pose a security threat. However, the move has resulted in the loss of 12 jobs with the firm which held the city's clamping contract over recent years.

A pedestrian died at the scene after being hit by a van close to his Co Limerick home last night. The accident happened about 5pm at Ballaugh, outside Abbeyfeale.

The victim, a man in his early 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital. The van driver was not injured. The road was still sealed off late last night as garda forensic investigators examined the area.
