A local junior football club was "just half an hour away" from losing their facilities when their changing rooms were destroyed in a fire last night.

Gardaí are now investigating the fire at Lucan's Beechpark Football Club in Griffeen Valley Park.

"We were half an hour from losing it all," chairman Eamonn O'Hara told Independent.ie as he expressed devastation at the blaze.

"It could have wiped out the whole club."

Emergency services received a call to the scene shortly after 10.30pm last night after one of the renovated containers was set ablaze.

Luckily, a coach living nearby was able to open the doors to a neighbouring container where the club's equipment is stored.

"Our club has about 200 members, we're devastated," Mr O'Hara said.

"We've had trouble with a group of anti-social teenagers for about two years now.

"One of these containers was practically burnt to the ground.

"We're at the point where we don't know what to do. We've been in Lucan, running this club for 37 years and we've never had trouble like this before."

Mr O'Hara said members of the club are fearful of more anti-social behaviour over the upcoming summer holidays.
