'We have been punished enough'

ANGRY smokers have lodged official complaints with Health Minister James Reilly, claiming they feel persecuted by proposed curbs on their freedom to light up in public places.

Letters highlighting their anger were released to the Irish Independent under Freedom of Information rules. One smoker described plans to ban smoking in cars as an outrage and warned the Government to stop interfering.

"How many more restrictions are on the way? I will never vote Fine Gael again."

Another smoker accused Dr Reilly of trying to "score points" and being "a bully" with the park ban.

Another letter condemned former Health Minister Micheal Martin for the workplace ban. The smoker asked that the extension of the ban to all hospital grounds not go ahead. "Smokers have been punished enough," they pleaded.
