More than half the country’s second-level schools are facing effective closure on Thursday October 27 in the row over pay.

The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has announced a wave of strike dates that will cause chaos in the education system.

They are threatening seven one -day strikes and have also announced that they will withdraw from supervision and substitution duties from Monday November 7,

Their plan means schools would open again on October 28, when they are due to close again for the mid-term break. The would be due to re-open after the break, on Monday November 7.

The November 7 deadline give school managers insufficient time to put together workable contingency plan involving external supervisors who would be needed if teachers stopped doing this work.

The one-day strikes are

Thursday, October 27th

Tuesday, November 8th

Wednesday, November 16th

Thursday, November 24th

Tuesday, November 29th

Tuesday, December 6th

Wednesday, December 7th
