Irish Water paid more than €200,000 to members of the public who have sustained injuries or had property damaged since it began installing meters.

Up until the end of June this year, it had 713,000 meters installed with 872 alleged incidents of damages or injuries referred to their insurance company.

While 381 of these complaints remain open today, some 491 have been closed and Irish Water paid out €200,669.

"The Irish Water Metering project is a significant project to install one million meters nationally over several years," a spokeswoman said.

"Having installed almost 800,000 meters to date the level of accidental damage is extremely low for a project of this scale."

The Freedom of Information request shows a total of 4,386 calls to the Irish Water Domestic Water Meter Programme last year.
