Water and home taxes are lesser of two evils
THE household charge is not popular but the public would rather see taxes on local services and water than see incomes taxes increased, the Irish Independent/Millward Brown Lansdowne opinion poll shows.
Four out of five of those polled expressed a preference for individual local charges on property and water as the fairest way to pay.
And the preference is clearly for charges to be based on the value of the property and the water consumed by the household.
Given the choice, 52pc pick a property tax based on value and water charges on consumption, as opposed to 28pc opting for a flat-rate charge.
The flat-rate charge option is higher among those over 65, possibly a reflection of pensioners fearing being hit by large property taxes.
