Watchdog probes death in garda cell

THE garda watchdog is investigating after a young man was found dead in a garda station cell.

The 21-year-old, named locally as Nathan Kirby, is the second person to be found dead in Dungarvan Garda Station after Patrick Hayes died there in 2001.

Mr Kirby, from Cathal Brugha Place, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, was arrested shortly before 11am yesterday and was detained at the station.

His body was discovered in a cell sometime before noon.

The Garda Ombudsman – the force's official watchdog – has been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. A spokesman said a post mortem will be carried out tomorrow at Waterford Regional Hospital.

It is understood the young man was under arrest for a minor public order offence.

In 2001, Patrick Hayes was found hanging in a cell at the station.

Mr Hayes had just been released from jail two days earlier after serving eight months of a 19-month sentence.

He had been arrested on the morning of May 3 for breaking a barring order to stay away from his former partner and mother of two of his children.
