Watch: Driver uses hard shoulder to undertake lorry on busy airport road

Jonathan Bell

This is the moment a driver used the hard shoulder to undertake a lorry on a busy road on the outskirts of Belfast.

The footage was captured by the driver of a car behind the vehicle over the weekend on the main Moira to Nutts Corner road.

The car, a silver Vauxhall Corsa can be seen behind the lorry weaving in and out on the inside before eventually pulling onto the hard shoulder and undertaking the lorry.

Since the footage was posted on the Facebook page 'Idiot Drivers Northern Ireland,' it has been viewed almost 100,000 times.

An administrator for the page described the manoeuvre as "crazy".

"Had there been anyone on the inside they would have been killed. This is just nothing but impatience and the driver needs to slow down and think about what they are doing."

"With winter the roads are getting worse, visibility is poor and surfaces are slippy. You can not get away with the likes of this."

He added: "That is a busy road lots of people use it to avoid the city and then there is the airport traffic. You'll not be long on it before you hit something slow moving and you just have to wait it out."

"People just need to slow down and take their time."

The police have been asked for a comment.

In June a teenager was banned from driving after she used the hard shoulder on the opposite side of the carriageway to overtake traffic near the crest of a hill on a road between Coleraine and Limavady.
