The promise of doggy treats came in handy today as a trapped dog was rescued from a steep cliff edge and brought to safety.

The Irish Coast Guard Operations rescued Trixie, a one-year-old Springer Spaniel pup, who was trapped on the side of a cliff at Deer Park on Howth Head, Dublin.

While out walking with her owner earlier today, Trixie managed to run away and fell down the side of the cliff to a narrow ledge about ten feet below.

Below the ledge was a further 30-feet steep drop to the ground.

Her owner was unable to get to her and became concerned for her safety when she rang the Irish Coast Guard.

The team set up a cliff rescue and lowered one of their rescue climbers, Robin Blandford, to the dog.

At first a bit wary of the new arrival’s brightly-coloured clothing, Trixie took a while to warm to her new friend on the cliff edge.

A few doggy biscuits later, Trixie was brought into the comfort of the Coast Guard’s ‘Doggy Bag’, which stops the dog and the rescuer from getting too close to one another on the descent to safety.

Trixie was reunited with her relieved owner at the bottom of the cliff.
