THE wasp population has also taken a hammering this year.

Many beekeepers encounter wasps in their course of work and have noted a dramatic drop in numbers. David Lee of FIBA said: "By this time of year I would have encountered around 20 queens but I have seen just one."

In Britain wildlife group Buglife has reported a steep decline in the wasp population, with damp impacting on aphid populations, one of their biggest food sources.

"Wasps and bumble bees are ground dwellers so they would have been seriously affected not only by the cold temperatures but especially by the heavy rain we've had," said Dr John McMullan, a bee scientist and research associate with TCD.
