GARDAI have warned the public not to be taken in by a lottery scam aimed at persuading unsuspecting victims to divulge their personal bank account details.
Detectives in Killarney, Co Kerry, are investigating the source of the bogus letters.
A spokesman said "scores of complaints" have been made.
The letters, which originated in Spain, claim that the recipients have shared a €8.052m jackpot in Madrid and ask for personal bank details to enable the claims to be processed.
The letter tells the recipient that they have won a personal prize of €1,610,550, but they are asked not to go public with the news for security reasons.
