Warning issued over unlicensed travel agency

HOLIDAYMAKERS booking through Dublin travel agency GPS Travel could be stranded if anything goes wrong, a state watchdog warned yesterday.

The Commission for Aviation Regulation warned that Apex Travel Consulting Ltd, trading as GPS Travel, has not had its licence renewed. It ordered the firm to cease taking new bookings immediately, as future bookings will not be bonded. The system ensures passengers are repatriated if a company ceases trading or to provide refunds if their promised holiday cannot be provided.

However, existing bookings will be covered as GPS Travel, which is based at 26 Eustace Street in Dublin city centre, was licensed and bonded up to May 1.

Agency owner Gordon Pullen said the problem was purely one of missing the deadline to submit paperwork, and he expected the firm to have a licence in place by today.

"We are a start-up company who only opened last year so we had never gone through the license renewal process before," he said.
