Warning issued on dangers of illegal 'tan jabs'

The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) has advised people using illegal 'tan jabs' bought online to stop doing so immediately.

The IMB yesterday issued a safety alert in relation to the unauthorised tanning medicine Melanotan (I and II).

"There is no evidence that it is safe or effective. The IMB has previously warned of the risk of side-effects . . . This product is not authorised in any country in Europe," it said.

Melanotan is an unlicensed medicine that claims to assist tanning. It also claims to have a number of additional benefits including appetite suppression.
