Vomiting bug in UHL

VISITING restrictions are in force at a number of wards at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) after an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

"There are now five confirmed and seven suspected cases in the hospital," a spokesman said. Three wards, 3A, 3C and 3D have imposed a total ban on visiting. It is hoped that ward 3B will be open to visitors later today.


A STATE counsel has called on those who failed to turn up for jury service at a court to be prosecuted.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, Stephen Coughlan BL said that only 75 out of a panel of 350 turned up in court for jury service. "The system would collapse if we didn't have juries," he said. Judge Gerald Keyes said it was not acceptable that people would not turn up for jury duty.


A FORMER schoolteacher and career guidance counsellor has pleaded guilty to four charges of indecent assault.

The case against Michael Byrne (76), Rosewell, Templerainey, Arklow, at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court has now been put back to December for sentencing and for the preparation of a probation service report and victim impact statement. Judge G Griffin lifted reporting restrictions in the case at the express wish of the victim. Byrne, who had taught in a school in Wicklow, pleaded guilty to the four indecent assault charges on various dates between 1975 and 1978.


THE library of one of the country's foremost Irish language activists is to be presented to NUI Galway by his family.

Writer, journalist and education campaigner, Deasun Breathnach, who died in 2007, was also a renowned republican and spent several years as editor of An Phoblacht in the 1970s.


RTE has followed the lead of hit US reality show 'Toddlers and Tiaras' by filming a fly-on-the-wall documentary on the explosive build-up to last weekend's controversial child pageant.

Film crews were given exclusive access to the chaotic scenes leading up to last Saturday's re-arranged event in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan. RTE confirmed a programme had been filmed at Corrigan's Kitchen. Spokeswoman Sinead Harrington said: "The broadcast date for this pageant will be confirmed at a later stage."
