Dublin's Beaumont Hospital has imposed a total ban on all visitors this weekend to ward off the spread of the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus.

A statement from the hospital said it enforced the ban because of an increased incidence of the bug in the community.

Exemptions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, the hospital said.

The ban is also operating at St Joseph's Hospital, Raheny.

Beaumont is urging the public to seek medical advice from their GP if they have symptoms of the Norovirus, before presenting to its emergency department.

Symptoms of the highly contagious bug include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
