Viking hordes are back to make history

THE Vikings have returned ... and they've invaded Co Wicklow.

Viking longships appeared in Luggala yesterday, in the heart of the Wicklow mountains, as filming was under way on the new hit 10-part series for The History Channel, starring Gabriel Byrne. 'The Vikings', which will chronicle the world of the Norsemen during medieval times, is being filmed primarily at the newly-built Ballyhenry studios in Ashford, Co Wicklow.

Our picture shows four Viking boats in choppy waters, with a number of extras in costume walking along the beach.

Security was tight in the Luggala estate as the cameras rolled. The show is the History Channel's first-ever scripted series and open casting days were held in June for thousands of extras.

'The Tudors' creator Michael Hirst developed 'The Vikings', which is a co-production between Wicklow-based World 2000 Entertainment and Toronto-based Take 5 Productions.

The series is set to premiere on the History Channel next year.
