A man has revealed how he was chased by a knife wielding thug after he witnessed shop staff being attacked.

Footage he took at the scene on his mobile phone shows the threats of violence shop staff across the capital face on an almost daily basis.

The 35-year-old said he had decided to grab a snack at Spar, in the Cornmarket area, when he saw staff struggling with a man at the entrance.

“They took away something from him and then he walked towards the exit,” Mr Ndebele told

“Without warning he turned back towards the Spar entrance and pulled out a small knife with a blue handle and started a confrontation with the store staff.

“He was later joined by a female accomplice who attempted to restrain him.

“At that point I had just started recording them with my cell phone and the female accomplice noticed I was recording them and they started chasing me instead for about 100m.”

The incident happened on October 20th at around 9.30pm.

Mr Ndebele, who has dual Irish South African citizenship, lost the pair and went back to the shop after a few minutes to check with the store staff if they were okay.

He later uploaded to the footage to YouTube and said he sent the link to the Garda twitter feed, but was told it was not the correct platform to report crime.

Mr Ndebele, who lives in the Kilmainham area, said he decided not to report the incident to officers.
