Video: Irish Coast Guard in unusual rescue of ‘Fungi Beag’

A BABY porpoise who got stranded on Portmarnock Beach in Dublin has been rescued by the Irish Coast Guard.

The team from Howth worked with members of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group who had initially raised the alarm.

“"The decision was made to bring the baby mammal who was beached back to the sea in the hope it would successfully swim away," a spokesman for Howth Coastguard said.

The porpoise – which is similar to a dolphin but with a shorter beak – was brought about 1km out to sea before being released.

The porpoise was named ‘Fungi Beag’ after Kerry’s famous dolphin.
