Video: Hope for passengers as LRC intervenes in Bus Eireann dispute

Anne-Marie Walsh

A DISRUPTIVE strike that threatened to leave Bus Eireann passengers stranded from this weekend may be averted.

The Labour Relations Commission will intervene today and invite the company and unions to talks in a bid to prevent staff from mounting pickets from Sunday.

Discussions are likely to begin in the morning if Bus Eireann and trade unions accept the mediation body’s invitation.

The possibility of industrial action across the entire CIE Group is still looming over cuts to staff benefits, including premium pay, expenses and annual leave.

Bus Eireann has warned it will impose the cuts from Sunday to slash €9m from its payroll costs.

SIPTU has warned that the strike it plans to mount next Thursday was also likely to hit Dublin Bus and Irish Rail.
