Victim of Dublin nightclub assault dies in hospital

A man who was the victim of a vicious assault outside of a Dublin nightclub over the weekend has died in hospital.

Christy Fitzgerald, was set upon outside a popular nightclub in Swords in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Fitzgerald who was originally from Finglas Dublin, but spent the past number of years in Drogheda, Co Louth, died on Tuesday evening despite efforts by his medical team.

Fitzgerald, who is a father, was believed to be at a birthday celebration before the attack took place.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the Wright Venue in Airside Retail Park, Swords, at 3.40am on Sunday morning. Fitzgerald was then taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital.

The scene of the attack was sealed off for a forensic examination to take place.

Mr Fitzgerald is known to gardaí and was sentenced for five years in the past for his part in a robbery in 2002.

However, the motive for the attack is not yet clear.

His body will be removed to the City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The office of the State Pathologist and Coroner have been notified.

In a statement a garda spokesman said:

"Gardaí arrested one man in relation to the attack this morning and the man, aged in his early 30s, is currently detained at Swords Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigating Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses and in particular would like to speak anybody who may have witnessed an altercation between two men outside the night club between 3.00am and 3.30am.
