VHI chairman is to stand down

THE chairman of the health insurer VHI, who recently clashed with Health Minister James Reilly, is to step down in September. Bernard Collins, chief executive of Lifemed Consulting Ltd, a medical device company, yesterday announced his resignation after serving as VHI chairman for nine years.

His resignation means the insurer will have a new chairman and chief executive in the coming months, following the appointment of John O'Dwyer to head the company from August.

Two in court over €250m drug bust

TWO men have been remanded in custody in connection with a record cocaine seizure estimated to be worth up to €250m. Abraham Shodiya (42), of Carnlough Road, Cabra, Dublin, and Gareth Hopkins (32), of Beechpark, Leixlip, Co Kildare, appeared separately at Blanchardstown District Court in Dublin.

Mr Shodiya faced four charges, including possession of the drug for sale or supply, on Tuesday at the Northwest Business Park in Ballycoolin, Dublin and at the car park of the Maldron Hotel in Tallaght. Mr Hopkins faces two charges. Both men were remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.

Bomb squad make viable device safe

AN Army bomb disposal team last night made safe a viable explosive device found near a residential area.

Gardai called in the bomb squad after the device was found on waste ground near houses in the Belcamp Lane area of Darndale in north Dublin. The device was made safe and the scene was declared free from danger shortly after 7pm.

US firm seeks to hire 100 new staff

A LEADING technology company is looking to hire 100 IT specialists and sales and marketing staff.

Salesforce.com will be holding a recruitment drive at Dublin's Morrison Hotel next Thursday.

The American company, based in San Francisco, set up in the Sandyford industrial estate in Dublin in 2000.

Stab victim fails to press charges

A MAN who was stabbed twice by an assailant known to him has refused to make a complaint to gardai. The 21-year-old man suffered a collapsed lung after he was attacked and stabbed by another man in Kilrush, Co Clare on Wednesday.

Gardai have not received any complaint on the incident and are not investigating the matter.
