A Lebanese man who is alleged to have abducted and murdered two Irish soldiers 34 years ago should be deported from the US, says a group of former Irish UN troops.

The Irish veterans want the US authorities to turn down an application by Mahmoud Bazzi for US citizenship.

Mr Bazzi has denied killing Private Thomas Barrett (29), from Macroom, Co Cork, and Private Derek Smallhorne (31), from Bluebell, Dublin, in April 1980. He has been living and working in the US for more three decades.

A group called 'Justice for Smallhorne and Barrett' has called on the Government to ask the US authorities to deport him back to Lebanon. Several Irish UN veterans gathered at the Defence Forces National Memorial in Merrion Square yesterday to mark the 34th anniversary of the deaths.
