FIANNA Fail and Green Party TDs traumatised at the prospect of losing their Dail seats were last night urged to see "the bigger picture" by a veteran politician who twice endured precisely that same loss.
John Dennehy (FF) lost his Dail seat in Cork South-Central at the election in 1992 and then again in 2007.
But the 70-year-old stressed that he now regards losing his Dail seat four years ago for the second and final time as probably one of the best things that ever happened to him.
"It is amazing the way politics takes over so much of your time," he said.
"I was very disappointed to lose my seat in 2007 but I now thank God that it happened because I have had the time for so many other wonderful things in my life," he said.
"I think most people don't realise just how much hard work is involved in politics. They hear about the Dail being on Christmas or summer break and think politicians are on holidays all the time."
Mr Dennehy -- a father of seven -- now has 13 grandchildren and says he cherishes every moment he gets to spend with them.
