The Vatican is to issue a response to the report on the Cloyne diocese within the next five weeks, it was announced today.

The news came after it emerged that the The Papal Nuncio to Ireland is to be sent to the Czech Republic.

Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, is expected to return to Ireland before taking up his new posting.

It was announced on Monday that Archbishop Leanza had returned to the Vatican after being recalled for consultations on the Cloyne Report.

But even before its publication the Department of Foreign Affairs had been made aware of plans to reassign him.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny last week accused the Catholic Church hierarchy of downplaying 'the rape and torture of children' to protect its power, standing and reputation.

The Cloyne report heavily criticised the church's handling of cases of clerical sex abuse in the Cork diocese.

The Government is still awaiting an official response from the Vatican to its request for an explanation concerning its interference with child protection in Ireland.

Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald said an urgent detailed response was needed following the recall of the Papal Nuncio.
