Gardaí have recovered a 17th-century chalice stolen in a burglary 21 years ago.
The stroke of luck came after someone saw the stolen chalice being advertised for auction and alerted gardaí.
It was due to go under the hammer in Dublin last week. However, gardaí seized the chalice.
The artefact, which is said to be "very valuable", was stolen during a burglary in Ardee town in Co Louth in 1998.
Later that year, a safe in which the chalice had been kept was found empty in Tallaght, Dublin. The whereabouts of the chalice remained a mystery until last week.
After seizing it, gardaí brought the chalice back to Ardee where it was positively identified as the one stolen 21 years ago.
Gardaí said they would "continue to investigate all the circumstances of the burglary that occurred in 1998".
Last night, they issued an appeal asking for anyone with information on the whereabouts of the chalice during the intervening years to contact Ardee garda station on 041 6853222, the Garda Confidential Line or 1800 666111 or any Garda station.
