US Embassy to move from Ballsbridge

THE US Embassy is set to move from its iconic Dublin 4 site in Ballsbridge.

The State Department in Washington has selected its famous Dublin Embassy in its latest list of overseas building operations for reconstruction, the Irish Independent has learned.

Diplomats have already inspected alternative sites around the city to relocate the mission. They have looked at premises near the Guinness brewery in St James's Gate and a greenfield site close to Ikea in Ballymun beside the M50.

The loss of the signature embassy building would be a bitter blow to the area. Local Labour TD and architect Ruairi Quinn, said: "It would be big loss."

A spokeswoman in the US Embassy confirmed that the embassy has been included in the list of embassies for new construction.

She added that the Dublin building does not meet new construction and security requirements.
