Unlikely twins: county gets a Chinese match
THE 32 members of Clare Co Council will ratify a twinning with the Yunnan Province on Monday.
The two parts of the world are unlikely twins, with the Chinese province having a population of 46 million, compared with Clare's population which tops 110,000.
The twinning proposal – set to be green-lighted at the council's Monday meeting – follows the Irish visit of China's Premier Xi Jinping, when he spent a lot of time in Clare.
In a report to be put before the meeting, director of service at the council, Ger Dollard, confirms the council has been in touch with the Chinese embassy here and Department of Foreign Affairs on the twinning.
Mr Dollard has informed councillors that Yunnan is rich in tourism and culture.
