Unemployment figures expected to dip below 400,000 mark

UNEMPLOYMENT figures due next week are expected to dip below the 400,000 mark.

Speaking today, Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte said they are expecting “good news” on Budget Day, next Tuesday.

“I think we will have good news on budget day on the unemployment figure falling below 400,000,” the minister told RTE’s News At One.

While conceding that unemployment in this country is still “unconscionably high”, he added that some 37,800 people have returned to the workplace in the last 12 months.

“That the figure will have fallen to below 400,000, that is encouragement to continue on the path that we’re going on to put more people back to work,” he said.
