A two-year-old boy has died following a house fire in Cork city this morning.

The boy's four-year-old brother and mother were also seriously injured in the fire at a house in the Elm Park area of Wilton.

The blaze is believed to have started at around 4am on the ground floor of the two-storey house while the family was asleep upstairs.

Neighbours and gardai had attempted to rescue the family but were unable to enter the house due to the amount of smoke.

The woman, who is in her late 20s, and her children were unconscious when they were rescued by firefighters.

They were given CPR at the scene before being rushed to Cork University Hospital, where one of the boys died.

The woman and her four-year-old son remain in a serious condition.

Garda forensic officers are investigating the exact cause of the blaze, which is not believed to be suspicious.
