Two patients are being treated for injuries after they were hurt when a fire broke out on a ward at Mayo General Hospital.
More than 30 patients needed to be evacuated when the fire was first spotted yesterday evening.
A spokesperson for Mayo General said they could not comment on the severity of the two patients' injuries, but confirmed their families had been contacted and that an investigation was underway to establish what caused the fire.
Four members of staff were taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department last night but have since been released, the spokesperson added.
“All patients were allowed to return to the ward shortly after midnight,” they said.
The hospital added it wanted to acknowledge the prompt action of its staff and of the Mayo fire services in dealing with "this serious incident".
Two fire-fighting units called to the hospital in Castlebar yesterday evening, and ambulance staff assisted with transferring patients to another ward within the hospital while the fire was dealt with.
