TWO men will appear in court tomorrow morning to be charged in connection with a burglary that ended in a dramatic high speed chase with gardai.

At around 5.30pm on Saturday a lone man entered Farrell's on Main Street, Ballinalee, Co Longford, and stole a sum of money.

The thief then left the scene and got into a waiting getaway car with two other occupants.

A high speed chase ensued after a garda patrol car responded to the call as the car left the scene.

The garda car indicated for the vehicle to stop, however it failed to do so and instead sped off.

It was followed by two garda cars from Ballinalee, into Co Leitrim.

The driver of the getaway car rammed one of the chasing garda patrol cars a number of times in the course of the chase.

However it was eventually stopped on the M4 motorway near Mullingar, with the assistance of local garda units.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene however the two other suspects tried to get away.

Gardai called in an air support helicopter and following a lengthy search, a 19-year-old was arrested.

However the final suspect managed to get escape and gardai said this evening that he was still at large.

Both suspects were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, one at Granard Garda Station and the other at Longford Garda Station.

They are both expected to appear before Longford District Court tomorrow morning charged in connection with the incident.
