Two killed on roads over bank holiday weekend

Two people were killed on the roads over the weekend.

Joe McLoughlin, a former Defence Forces member, was killed while walking a few hundred metres from his home in Sallins, Co Kildare, early yesterday.

The father-of-eight, who was in his 60s, was struck by a vehicle on the Naas-to-Clane Road at Sallins village at around 12.30am and rushed to Naas General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardai appealed for witnesses and anyone in Sallins village around the time to contact them on 045 884300 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.

Meanwhile, a woman in her 80s died near Stradbally in Co Laois at around 11.30am on Friday after appearing to lose control of the English-registered car she was driving.

The woman -- who was from the UK -- had arrived in Ireland by boat at Rosslare Harbour only hours earlier.
