TWO pedestrians, an elderly woman and a man, were killed in separate road crashes yesterday.
The deaths bring to nine the number pedestrians killed so far this year. The death toll on our roads is now 37 this year compared to 27 for the same period last year.
The elderly woman was killed last night when she was hit by a car on the old Athlone to Ballinasloe Road at Ballydangan, Roscommon, at about 8.30pm. It is understood she died at the scene. Gardai were last night still trying to establish her identity. Gardai appealed for witnesses to contact them on 090-6638300.
Earlier a man died after he was struck by a car in Co Kildare. The accident happened shortly before 7am yesterday at Kileighter Cross, Leixlip. The victim was named locally last night as Mark Shields (26), of Cushlawn Park, Tallaght, Dublin. His body was taken to Naas General Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried today.
