TWO people are dead and a third is fighting for his life following a horrific car crash in Kildare.

A vehicle occupied by an elderly couple collided with a motorcycle at Ballycullane, close to Athy, shortly before 2:30pm.

The 23-year-old motorcyclist who is from Athy died as a result of his injuries.

The female passenger of the car, who is in her eighties, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman's husband, who was driving the car, was rushed to Naas general hospital where he was today being treated for his injuries.

The couple are well known in the Athy and Kilkea areas and are heavily involved in Grange GAA Club.

The crash occured on a new link road between the M9 motorway and Athy.

It was built just over three years ago.

Local councilllor Mark Wall said that the community has been left “numb with shock”.

“These are three local people and the incident today has deeply saddened the entire community.

“Athy will now have to come together, like it always does, to deal with this tragedy,” he said.

The road itself has been closed pending forensic and technical examinations.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
