Two people have been found dead in a caravan park in Northern Ireland.

Police were called to Bonnys Caravan Park on the Tullybrannigan Road, Newcastle, Co Down, at around 3pm.

It is understood the two people were found inside a caravan and that the two people who died were a retired couple.

While Newcastle is more popular in the summer time for holiday makers, some caravans in Bonnys are occupied through the year.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said: "I'm shocked and deeply saddened by this awful discovery.

"I understand that police are treating it as suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at this stage.

"I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families of these two people who are undoubtedly going through a deeply traumatic and difficult time. I have no doubt that this tight-knit community will rally round and support them throughout the coming days and weeks."

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) inspector David McClements said: "Police attended a caravan site on Tullybrannigan Road in Newcastle at around 3pm on Wednesday 21st January.

"Two bodies were discovered at a caravan on the site and a multi-agency investigation is now under way into the cause of the deaths.psbn
