Tutu to honour Robinson for human rights work

Brian McDonald

ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu is to honour former President of Ireland Mary Robinson at a special event to mark her contribution to human rights and women's leadership.

Archbishop Tutu, who is archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, will join an international VIP list at a service at St Muredach's Cathedral in Mrs Robinson's home town of Ballina, Co Mayo, on May 11.

He will endorse the proposed new Mary Robinson Centre and will take part in a shared reflection with Mrs Robinson at the cathedral. The event will be chaired by broadcaster Olivia O'Leary.

Mrs Robinson is about to take up her new position as UN Special Envoy to Africa's troubled Great Lakes region.

The Mary Robinson Centre is being developed by a partnership including National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), Mayo County Council, Ballina Town Council, the local community and Mrs Robinson's family together with government support.
