RTÉ's new 'Six One' host Caitríona Perry has told how it was "bizarre" when US President Donald Trump told her she had a "nice smile".

The station's outgoing Washington correspondent spoke for the first time about the bizarre exchange in the Oval Office that drew attention around the world.

"It was probably more like an eye-roll type moment. I didn't do that because I'm a professional," she said on the 'Late Late Show.'

She recalled the moment last June when she was in the White House to witness the president's telephone conversation with new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Trump beckoned her with his finger and asked Perry her name and where she was from. Asked about being beckoned by Trump's finger, she said: "Honestly, I was thinking, 'this is a bit bizarre,'" she said, but as he was the president of the United States she approached his desk.

Asked how she felt, she replied: "It was no big deal." Perry will co-host 'Six One' with Keelin Shanley from January.
