Trio of Taoisigh toast 'reluctant' predecessor

TWO former Taoisigh and the current office holder were on hand last night to launch a major biography of John A Costello -- 'The Reluctant Taoiseach'.

The biography of the Fine Gael leader who led the first coalition government was written by historian and RTE journalist David McCullagh. It was launched by another former FG Taoiseach, Liam Cosgrave, pictured (right) being greeted by Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

Also present at the event in Dublin's Mansion House were Albert Reynolds, FG leader Enda Kenny and other senior political figures.

Mr McCullagh, RTE's political correspondent, spent five years charting the life of the man who served as Taoiseach from 1948--51, and from 1954--57.

"It was very hard work but I enjoyed doing it and I learnt a lot about a man sadly neglected in public memory," he said.

Mr Cosgrave praised Mr Costello's "remarkable career", as a Taoiseach, barrister and Attorney General.
