KATE Palmer of 'Trinity News' last night scooped the Editor of the Year award at the 12th Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards, in association with the Irish Independent.

More than 600 students attended the ceremony at Dublin's Ballsbridge Hotel.

Irish Independent education correspondent Katherine Donnelly said Ms Palmer won because of her thoughtful layout and design.

Ms Donnelly described the paper as "a conveniently sized, well thought-out production, covering a wide variety of topics of student interest".

Other winners included 'The University Times' from Trinity College Dublin, which won the Newspaper of the Year award. Trinity and UCD collected six awards apiece.

Jerry Larkin from University College Cork won the Student Journalist of the Year award.
