Father Jim Noonan, a brother of the Finance Minister, Michael Noonan, has died.

Fr Noonan, who was more than five older that his brother, passed away today after a long illness.

He died, aged 78, at the headquarters of the Kiltegan Fathers in Co Wicklow and he had been a member of that order for over 50 years.

Fr Noonan was a native of Loughill on the Limerick-Kerry border where his father was the local school principal.

As a missionary priest he worked in Nigeria for 47 years.

He returned to Foynes, where his late mother had lived, in 2009, and had worked a curate in the local Shanagolden-Foynes Parish.

Fr Noonan preached a moving homily at the funeral of his sister-in-law Florence, the wife of Michael Noonan, in February 2012.
