A TRUE patriot who worked hard to educate her family and helped make the country great, is how Ellen Higgins has been remembered at her funeral mass.

Mrs Higgins, who was the mother of Socialist Party leader and Dublin West TD Joe Higgins, was buried in Garfinny Cemetery in Dingle, Co Kerry today.

She passed away at West Kerry Community Hospital in Dingle on Wednesday morning surrounded by her family. She was 95.

Her son, Joe led mourners at her funeral that also included his brother Tom, sisters Mary, Nora, Terry and Helen, 22 of her 23 grandchildren and her extended family.

President Michael D Higgins was represented by his aide de camp Col Brendan McAndrew and the Taoiseach Enda Kenny was represented by Comdt Sean Treacy.

Chief celebrant Fr Tom Looney noted Mrs Higgins was older than the State but was part of the generation who had stayed at home and worked hard to make the country was it was.

"They built their lives and they built their families on farms based on hard work and honest work, neighbourliness and their earnest, honest efforts.

"Sadly, not everyone had that sense of patriotism and christianity that we read about in the papers every day, the people who left the side down, who lacked genuine patriotism," Fr Looney said.

Mrs Higgins was predeceased by her husband Denis and three of her children; her sons Liam - a former Kerry footballer and broadcaster with Raidio na Gaeltachta - Denis Og and her daughter Brid (Slattery).
