Tributes paid to 'brilliant' Costello

Shane Hickey

Declan Costello was a man who was uncomfortable with the status quo and was deeply compassionate towards those in need, those in attendance at his removal heard yesterday evening.

President Mary McAleese joined a range of figures from politics and the legal profession last night at the removal of the former Fine Gael TD, Attorney General and president of the High Court.

Mr Costello, a son of former taoiseach John A Costello, was behind the development of the 'Just Society' document within Fine Gael, which helped to modernise the party and attract talented figures like Garret FitzGerald.

Fr Martin Clarke said: "In Declan our God gave us the gift of a unique person, a person who was intellectually brilliant, a person who was passionate in his commitment to social justice, a person who was impeccable in his integrity."

Mr Costello's funeral Mass takes place this morning in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Dublin, at 10am.
