THE family of a young woman who died from cancer just days after giving birth have held a fundraising dinner in her honour.

Melissa Hamilton (34) died in September, just eight days after giving birth to her third child, Grace.

She had only been told the previous month that she had breast cancer.

More than 500 people attended the event last night to raise money for the Hamilton family, which was organised by the Villa Rose Hotel in Ballybofey, Co Donegal.

Melissa's heartbroken husband Seamus, from Killygordon, has given up his job as a mechanic to look after his three daughters, Jessica (6), Darcy (2) and Grace, who is now just four months old.

"It probably hasn't sunk in yet," he said. "It just seems like yesterday and people ask how I'm coping and that's hard to answer. The worst is probably yet to come. I have all sorts of thoughts going through my head.

"This event was organised by the hotel and we are very grateful as it will raise awareness about what breast cancer can do," he added.

Melissa's brother Garvan said she meant "absolutely everything" to Seamus and the girls.

"She was bright and bubbly and got on with everyone, both young and old," he said.

"Even now it's hard to believe she's gone. You are expecting her to come through the door smiling as she always did," he said.

Donations can be made to: The Melissa Hamilton Appeal Fund at Bank of Ireland, account number 93459581, sort code 90-47-12.
