Tribesmen still heroes despite the heartbreak
THEY didn't return home victorious but that didn't stop hurling fans gathering in their thousands yesterday to welcome home the returning Galway team.
Up to 5,000 supporters packed into Pearse Stadium in the city last night where not even the wind or rain could dampen their spirits.
Despite their heartbreak at the loss to Kilkenny on Sunday the crowds were determined to show their appreciation to the team that had given their all.
For the young fans eagerly awaiting their heroes there was one name in particular that proved a draw. Joe Canning was a man in demand with Aoife O'Looney (9) and her sister Emma (7), from Oranmore, eager to have their hurls signed by their hero.
Team captain Fergal Moore was joined by Galway manager Anthony Cunningham on stage where he said he was overwhelmed by the turnout.
"We are taken aback by the reception we've had here tonight. It's a huge encouragement for the players," he said.
"We know the raw material is there and if everyone supports us we can be back next year," he added.
