A travel agent who was held up by a masked man has described the moment of terror when he appeared in her premises brandishing a knife and demanding money.

Ciara Mooney (34) was preparing for the busy period when customers start planning their summer holidays after Christmas when the robbery happened on Monday evening.

She had spent the day at her Freedom Travel shop on the Main Street in Celbridge, Co Kildare, when the lone raider appeared at around 5pm.

"It was dark outside, and I was with one of my staff, thankfully there were no customers in the shop at the time," said Ms Mooney.

"Someone came in and when I looked up he was waving a knife with a six or seven-inch blade around.

"He had a pair of dark tights over his head that had a pattern in them, which made him look disfigured, it was very frightening.

"He ushered us into the back office and forced us to open the safe.

"After he cleaned out the safe he was looking for cash registers, but we don't use any, so then he wanted our wallets.

"All he was interested in was cash."

Ms Mooney is hoping someone will know who the raider is and help gardaí catch him before he terrifies someone else.

"I'm just hoping if anyone knows anything they might help, or if they saw anything suspicious they might remember it and help find this person," she said.

"I've been here for seven years now and we've never been robbed before.

"It is a terrifying experience."

The suspect is described as around 5ft 11in tall, and of medium build.

No arrests have yet been made but gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
