'Transformers' to invade Dublin Toy Fair at the RDS

TRANSFORMERS fans of all ages are in for a treat with the news that the iconic Optimus Prime Truck is visiting Ireland for the first time next week.

The Eighties icon, and star of the recent Michael Bay blockbuster movies, will be at the Dublin Toy Fair at the RDS, from Wednesday, November 27, to December 1.

Toy manufacturer Hasbro has recreated Optimus Prime by transforming a genuine Peterbilt big rig truck into a full-sized, chromed replica of the Autobots leader.

At the Dublin Toy Fair, children and their parents will have the opportunity to get their picture taken alongside the famous truck and see all the latest Transformers toys.

"We're really excited to see the crowd's reaction to Optimus Prime at the RDS," said Patrick O'Sullivan from the Dublin Toy Fair.

"The industry is bringing over the best it has to offer, and the biggest names in toys will be there."

TALENTED young violinist Mairead Hickey, 17, from The Lough, Cork city, a sixth year student at Mount Mercy College in Cork, has won the 2013 Fr Frank Maher Music Award sponsored by Top Security.

It is Ireland's largest classical music scholarship for post-primary schools and seven young finalists from Dublin, Cork, Roscommon, Waterford and Donegal competed at Castleknock College in Dublin to win the top prize of €2,000 to further their musical career.

It is the second year in a row that the winner has come from Cork city.

Mairead performed two pieces on the night: Siciliana from Sonata I in G Minor by Bach and La Capricieuse by Elgar.

A delighted Mairead said: "I am hoping to audition for a place at a German university next year to study under a world famous violin virtuoso. If I'm successful, I plan to put my €2,000 prize money from the Fr Frank Maher Music Award towards this."


MUSIC legend Bryan Adams is coming back to rock the Rebel County.

Following his last sellout Show at Live At The Marquee in 2011, Aiken Promotions has announced that the star will bring his show back to Cork on Saturday, June 28, 2014. Tickets go on sale this Thursday at 9am from all usual outlets.

The full band rock tour is being interspersed with Adams's highly successful Bare Bones acoustic tour, supporting the release of his newest CD of the same name.


DOWN Syndrome Cork is holding its annual bazaar today at 2pm in the SMA Hall, Wilton.

All proceeds go directly to supporting the children and adults of Cork with Down syndrome, providing a range of services from speech and language therapy to social outings to educational support.
