THE death of an eight-year-old boy is the north Cork town of Charleville is being treated today as a tragic sudden death.
The boy was discovered unresponsive at his home on the Cork-Limerick border early this morning.
Despite frantic efforts to stabilise his condition by the emergency services, he was pronounced dead before he could be rushed to hospital.
"It is desperate - everyone here is absolutely stunned. We just couldn't believe it when we heard," one neighbor said.
The body of the child remains at the scene and a female, aged 43, has been taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
The scene has been sealed-off by gardai, who were awaiting the attendance of the State Pathologist.
The post mortem examination expected to be carried out at Cork University Hospital (CUH) later this evening.
